Stormy Weather

Last week we worked with Arctic Ovens (above) and Endurance tents (below).

As requested, pictures of my messy room since some have asked

More messy room, at times it is clean...I promise

Last shot of the messy room.

Picture of some folks treking outside during one of the storms.

McMurdo all lit up.
Pictures people put on the common drive here. It appears that everyone is having a bit of fun with the whole Doc thing.
Lake Vostok.
More fun with the Doc.

A window broke out of hut ten and the whole place filled with snow during the storms.

More of hut 10 craziness.

Just a snow covered truck.

Another buried truck. There were scenes like this all over station after the storm cleared.

A mug I drew on. Yes it is a pegasus.

The last two weeks we have been getting hammered by storms. We have set new records for the month of April for 24 hr. snow accumulation. Rumor has it that we got 5 ft. of snow the last two weeks from the weather system that has been wreaking havoc on the station. Power was knocked out multiple times, heat was lost, some pipes in a building burst, the roof on the structure next to my workplace was blown off, steel cargo milvans were blown around, and trucks and buildings were pretty much completely buried in snow. It has been pretty chaotic. All the seasoned winter folks keep talking about how unusual this kind of weather this time of year is. It is pretty awesome. Now things have calmed down and it is not currently snowing or storming. I’m guessing we will probably spend a good week just cleaning up town. Another rumor being passed around is that on Black Island (place where all of our communication equipment is set up) the wind was just a couple of mph away from breaking the world record for the strongest wind, which I have been told happened in New Hampshire where the wind peaked at 231 mph. on the top of Mt. Washington.

Other news: (Before continuing please take a moment to prepare your self for some real excitement)
- I recently switched to creamy peanut butter. I prefer crunchy and have been eating crunchy up until a couple of weeks ago. I switched because the crunchy down here has sugar and vegetable oil in it, and the creamy only has peanuts and salt listed as its ingredients. I really don’t like the creamy as much, but one of the ladies I work with is a REALLY healthy eater, and I feel bad/guilty if I choose the crunchy over the healthier creamy option. I’m trying to focus on the positives of the change. Aside from being better for me, the creamy peanut butter spreads easier on everything. Its not that the chunky didn’t spread well, but the creamy just spreads a little easier. The creamy doesn’t taste as good as the crunchy but I’m slowly convincing myself that it does. In a month or so I hope to completely adjust to the creamy.

- The volcano still hasn’t blown, but I recently was told why the doctor never really wears warm clothes. (I have only ever seen him wearing a leather jacket and jeans, and 50% of the time the jacket isn’t zipped.) Apparently, the reason he doesn’t need to wear warmer clothes is because he wraps his knees. Yes you read that right, he wraps his knees. Never mind that everyone else walks around wearing layers of clothing and giant goose down coats, the Doc doesn’t need any of that because he wraps his knees. He had some knee trouble and consequently, starting wrapping his knees with some sort of ace bandage wrap or something like it. Supposedly, he discovered that the wraps on his knees really keep his body heat in so he has no need to wear warmer clothes. His knee wraps keep his blood circulating well enough to eliminate the need for any other warm weather clothing. It makes me wonder why he wears any clothes at all. If the wraps work as well as he suggests, he could probably walk around naked and be completely comfortable in any temperature. Maybe he wears clothes so he doesn’t stand out as he travels back and forward in time.

- The other weekend we had a building party. Everyone opened up the doors to their house and people just went from room to room hanging out and having a good time. Some of the Kiwis came over from Scott Base to participate. Kiwis are insane. One of them stuck a string of toilet paper in his butt crack then lit it on fire and ran through the hall with his pants down, burning TP flapping in the air. While this was happening another Kiwi had managed to break a window in the car they drove over in, climb into the drivers seat, throw up on the steering wheel and then pass out, causing his face to freeze to the puke covered steering wheel. As it was still storming outside, he got pretty cold and had to be treated for some hypothermia. Crazy! Luckily at the time the Doc wasn’t stuck in the past or future, so he was able to help with the situation.

- The last sunset has come and gone. It is now getting darker and darker every day. Most people are now having a bit of trouble sleeping, myself included. No worries though, it is pretty easy to stay occupied, just staring into space seems to keep me entertained for at least a couple of hours. Sometimes I also draw on coffee mugs to pass the time. (see pic above)

- The Kiwis are hosting a polar plunge next weekend. It was supposed to be this last weekend but it was postponed due to in climate weather. They are going to chop a hole in the ice so you can jump in and then they pull you out. It will most likely be a pretty chilly event. Also, there is a famous dead people ball in our building next weekend. You are supposed to come dressed as a famous dead person. I have decided to go as Bob Ross the “famous” painter who starred in his own PBS show The Joy of Painting. He is most well known for his “happy little trees.”

- I am currently boycotting all baked goods. I am doing this because I think the baker is a racist. I overheard a conversation she was having the other day in the hall and was disgusted by what I heard. Consequently, I will attempt to put her out of business by not consuming a single thing she makes. I’m not expecting it to work, or even be noticed, but at least I’ll feel better about it. My physical health will probably improve after eliminating hate from my diet. I thought all the white angel food cake, white cupcakes, white sugar cookies, and white bread, etc….seemed to have a bit of a supremacist theme.

- I cut my finger the other day with my multi-tool. Nothing serious just a little snip really. I didn’t even put a band-aid on it. It seems to be slowly healing and will be even more unnoticeable than it was when it first happened soon. No cause for panic everyone.

- This just in! There are weekly town meetings where most of the supervisors get together and just talk about everything going on. At the last meeting concerns about peoples’ level of exhaustion was brought up. It was suggested that everyone get an extra day to off to help recover after all the storm madness that had recently ripped through. I believe most supervisors were ok with giving their employees a little extra time off to rest, but some said that they would be unable to do it. They had too much work to get done, and couldn’t afford to lose another day of productivity. After hearing this, the Doc piped up and said that if some work centers couldn’t afford to give their people time off, he could provide some stimulants to tired individuals to help get them through the days.

- Oh and a little piece of family news, my brother just recently became engaged! He told me it is too late to take it back, so I’ve decided to be happy for he and his lady and send them my congrats. A real mitzvah! I’m still a little upset that he didn’t take advantage of the free pancakes at I-Hop a couple of months ago, though and want him to know that this recent development hasn’t made me forget.

I hope everyone back home is enjoying spring. If anyone wants to email me pics or anything else feel free. I’d love to hear what the news or hot goss back home is.

A racist baker, huh? I was fucking pissing myself reading that. I miss you buddy and can't wait til you get back from your self imposed exile. I'm going to Costa Rica next Friday to learn to surf. My thoughts will be with you as I'm shredding some monsoon waves and plowing through the native, foreign or otherwise vajayjays. ONE LOVE PALLY!
