From the 49th back to the lower 48

I Just finished a 30 day crew in the backcountry of Denali. It was a huge success and a lot of fun. I know that I must be at least close to being in the right line of work when business involves sleeping in tents, hiking stunning scenic trails as a commute to work, watching for moose attacks, shooing away bears, living off of oatmeal, gorp, and rice and beans, and of course not holding in any flatulence.

Denali National Park is a massive place and has really awe inspiring scenery. I feel pretty lucky to have had the chance to live and work in it for the last month and a half. Unfortunately, my time here is done and I am now on my way to my next crew. It is time to leave the crisp fresh air, glacial rivers, and wide expanses of wilderness of Alaska and head east. Next stop some place south of Pittsburgh. Insert sarcastic exclamation here ___________! In just a day’s time I will be fighting off lymes disease causing ticks, scratching at poison ivy/oak, drinking water that can double as lighter fluid, fighting to stay hydrated in unbearably hot and humid weather, and breathing in exhaust from the urban sprawl that will be inescapable for thousands of miles. So long Alaska….

Here are some pics:

This is taken looking out from our work site. The pics don't do it justice.

This is taken from base camp looking out onto Lake 3 of the Triple Lakes where we were camped.

The group hiking along the Toklat river.

Where we bedded down for the night before hiking into a glacier

The view from the worksite. Again picture doesn't do it justice. We were pretty much surrounded by mountains at work.

Laundry Day

Home at base camp

Trail that we built!

The monster bull moose in our front yard.

The group hiking a ridge to avoid having to cross the river

What I don't have any pictures of are the doll sheep this man was photographing. I was too distracted by the most gigantic camera lens I have ever seen.

The view from the glacier we hiked into named by the group to be the Wolvermoose glacier

This beaver who is carrying an entire tree in it's mouth literally ran our whole group off the trail.

A view from the park road.

The J squareds playing some ball on Coors Field during our super sweet backstage tour led by the K man.
